The prototyping of motorcycles ( IZH-1, IZH-2, IZH-3, IZH-4, IZH-5) at the workshops at the munitions factory in Izhevsk in 1928-1929

History. IZH - 4

In a short space of time had been developed, made and prepared five motorcycles of five different models for the participation in the All-Union Motorcycle Race. The most impressive were motorcycles 'IZH-1' and 'IZH-2' with the V-type engine of two cylinders with the displacement 1200 cc and maximum power 24 hp. For that time they were the most original and up-to-date models. Crankshaft was situated linearly, whirling moment propagated on front wheel from the three-stage gearbox, fulfilled in block with engine and cardan shaft. Some parts of the motorcycle were based on the drafts of the German designer E. Newman-Neander. The lower part of the frame served the body of the muffler as well, it was the typical feature for all the motorcycles of the first series. 'IZH-2' differed from the other by the air ventilator for cooling the engine and the gear on the sidecar wheel. 'IZH-3' had the V-type engine "Wanderer" of two cylinders with the displacement 750 cc. 'IZH-4' was the lightest motorcycle. 'IZH-5' with the name 'Composition' was created with the use of aggregates of the motorcycle 'Neander' with the displacement 500 cc. It had the original front fork and modified frame.

All these motorcycles participated successfully in the Second All-Russian Motorcycle-Race, which took place in September-October in 1929. Afterwards the smallest motorcycle 'IZH-4' was recommended for the mass production. However 'IZHSTAL' plant obtained the more important request and the first experience in motorcycle industry didn't proceed. Nevertheless, Mozharov didn't stop at this and got over to Leningrad, where he started working at a passenger motorcycle 'L-300' under the documentation, bringing by the German firm 'DKV'.
